The history of U-Tapao dates back to October 1960 when the Thai Navy used U-Tapao for Naval Operations. In 1965, the major American Buildup began with the construction of a
11,500' runway and other facilities. |

In June 1966, U-Tapao was activated as an air base and KC135 StratoTankers began inflight refueling operations in August of 1966. In April of 1967, the B-52s arrived and
began flying their famous missions. After the Vietnam War ended, the base was used to support Special Operations. It is now being used as an Air Cargo Hub and most recently as an Airport. |

Rather than duplicate much of the existing information, you can proceed to the Base Pamphlet
and read more about the base and the people in the LOS (Land Of Smiles). These pages are rather large so it is recommended you maximize your web browser window to use the entire screen.
Navigation through the pages can be performed by clicking on the right page to proceed forward or left page to go back. There is also a Page Index (Navigation Aid) at the bottom of the page.
Enjoy! |
